Healthy Minds, Healthy Business

Mental health challenges cost employers and employees billions of dollars through missed work, turnover, absenteeism, and presenteeism. Mental illness, toxic stress, and trauma are hidden strains on and threats to employee morale and satisfaction, team cohesion and productivity, and company success. However, there are many ways that businesses can address mental health in the workplace.

According to Michigan’s Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity, 61% of adults have encountered at least one Adverse Childhood Experience (ACE), and 1 in 6 have faced four or more. These experiences can be associated with job difficulties, absenteeism, and financial issues. The CDC reports that preventing ACEs could potentially reduce the number of adults with depression by up to 44%. Providing mental health support at work may improve financial stability and reduce the impact of ACEs on Michigan adults and their families.

Supporting employee mental health and workplace wellness benefits both employees and businesses. These programs reduce toxic workplaces, staff turnover and increases productivity. Mental wellness provides economic stability, helps families prevent and mitigate ACEs, and is profitable for businesses.

Employers can use several strategies to improve their employees’ mental health. These methods include fostering a supportive work environment, providing comprehensive insurance plans that cover mental health, building trust between managers and employees, training employees in resilience, and offering Employee Assistance Programs.
